Key Ideas for CNC

Before we jump into the "how" part of this course, it's important to go over a few ideas first.

CNC Woodworking is Just Woodworking

We get a lot of questions from users about things like where to buy materials, or why they're getting tear-out from a cut. We used to be confused about these questions, and then we realized that many new users don't make the connection that CNC woodworking is just like regular woodworking. The same tools, the same techniques, the same materials. The only difference is that you're using machines to do the work.

As you go through the learning process it's important to keep in mind that there's nothing magical going on here; all of the woodworking knowledge you already have applies to CNC woodworking.

Straightforward, not Easy

We'd like to say that CNC is so easy that anyone can do it, but that's not true. It's not easy.

The reason that we focus on shipping a complete machine that comes with everything you need to get started is that we can make the CNC process straightforward. If you go through this course and take your time, you will get good results.

For many people, this course might be painfully slow. We're going to go through every step of the process to try and give you an understanding of "why" you do things, not just how to do them. If you take the time, you'll find that CNC is a straightforward process that you can apply to hundreds of projects.

Nothing is Random

We get emails daily with the following subject line:

The truth is that nothing is random. If your machine is doing something unexpected, it's doing it for one of three reasons:

  1. You told it to do something, and it's doing that.
  2. The machine needs maintenance. (There's dust and chips packed into somewhere they shouldn't be)
  3. Something broke.

After going through thousands of customer emails, 95% of the time, it's number 1- the user told the machine to do something and the machine did it.

Why is this important? You cannot begin to troubleshoot a problem if you assume everything is random. You're new to this process and you're going to make mistakes. Assume that you're to blame, and work through the process.

If you get stuck, send us your file to look at so we can help figure out what went wrong.
